Start your adventure with a comfortable pickup from your hotel in Bali and head to Gilimanuk Harbor on the island's western edge. From there, take a scenic ferry ride to Java and arrive at Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi. Your journey continues in a 4WD vehicle, climbing through dense rainforests dotted with towering ferns and trees, all the way to the remote village of Licin at the base of Mount Ijen.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, the Ijen Crater is a natural wonder that leaves a lasting impression. The cool mountain air—often dipping as low as 2°C—greets you as you begin your trek toward the crater. Along the way, you'll pass by lush greenery and may encounter local sulfur miners carrying their heavy loads from the crater below.

At the summit, just before sunrise, you’ll witness the otherworldly Blue Fire—a rare phenomenon where electric-blue flames dance along the crater floor. As daylight breaks, take in breathtaking views of the turquoise lake blanketed by rising sulfur mists and surrounded by rugged volcanic terrain.

Know before you go

The activity is closed on the first Friday of every month due to regular cleansing by local environmental protection authorities. And will be on operation normally on the following day. Avoid wearing or carrying jewelry or accessories made from certain metals (Especially Gold or Silver) as it can change colors due to chemical reaction on the sulphuric crater. For Ijen activities, a health certificate from a doctor/clinic/hospital is required, issued the day before the scheduled activity.
